With the 19th anniversary of the tragic terrorism attacks on New York City; Shanksville, PA; and the Pentagon approaching, the Transportation Institute is offering a virtual event to honor the men and women who crewed vessels from pleasure crafts to tugboats and ferries that rescued people from Lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001.
It will take place at 6 pm (EDT) on Friday, September 11. (The Transportation Institute represents U.S.-flag maritime companies.)
Among the stories to be related are those from U.S. Coast Guard and maritime industry personnel. Some 800 mariners aboard 125 vessels lifted 500,000 people to safety after the Twin Towers were hit by commercial aircraft and collapsed. The rescue became the largest maritime evacuation in history.
The free event will be available via Zoom. It will be hosted by Turnstile Tours and the New York Council Navy League.
Participants in the virtual presentation will be able to submit questions.
