More than 100 union members, friends and family gathered in the Seattle Catholic Seamen’s Club on May 17 to celebrate the Puget Sound Ports Council’s annual Labor/Management Luncheon.

Receiving this year’s honor was Warren Aakervik, owner of Ballard Oil and a nearly 50-year member of Teamsters Local 174. Aakervik began his career as a truck driver and has maintained his union card as he rose through the business.

While introducing Aakervik, Ports Council President Vince O’Halloran said the honoree has never forgotten his roots. To emphasize the point, O’Halloran noted Aakervik was wearing his “Ballard tuxedo” – a company t-shirt under work coveralls.

Proceeds from the event assist various charities in the Puget Sound region.
