Via voice vote on August 3, the U.S. Senate confirmed retired Rear Admiral Mark H. “Buzz” Buzby (USN) as the new U.S. Maritime Administrator. He takes the helm of the Department of Transportation agency that oversees U.S.-flag shipping and shipbuilding among other programs – including the Jones Act.

“We look forward to working once again with Admiral Buzby,” stated MTD President Michael Sacco upon hearing the news. “We had a very good working relationship when he headed the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA). He understands and appreciates what we do and how it benefits America’s economic and national security. He is a good friend of the U.S.-flag merchant fleet.”

Buzby began his 34-year career in the Navy following his 1979 graduation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He served at sea with time as a vessel commander and ashore with the Navy staff and the Joint staff. He is the recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star as well as other personal and unit awards. While serving as MSC commander, he addressed the MTD executive board several times before retiring from the Navy in 2013.

He was president and CEO of the NDTA when President Trump nominated him in June to head the Maritime Administration.
