George Kourpius, who served as the International President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and on the Executive Board of the MTD from 1989 to 1997, passed away December 2. He was 87 years old.

The Sioux City, IA, native joined IAM Local 1637 at Zenith Corporation in 1952. He climbed the ranks within his local and district to become the president of District 162.

In 1983, Kourpius became the union’s Resident General Vice President. Six years later, he was sworn in as the Machinists 12th International President. In addition, he was a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Board between 1989 and 1997.

After retiring from the IAM, Kourpius continued fighting for working people as the head of the National Council of Senior Citizens. He was the founding president of the Alliance for Retired Americans in 2001, and served into 2009.

“Kourpius was a good friend and determined fighter for all working men and women, active and retired,” recalled MTD President Michael Sacco.
