U.S. Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) has become the new chairman of the House Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee for the remainder of the current session of Congress.

Mast’s district stretches along Florida’s Atlantic coast between Fort Pierce and Palm Beach. He is in his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served more than 12 years in the Army, including duty in Afghanistan, before injuries caused by an explosion forced him to retire.

The subcommittee is part of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The subcommittee has oversight on the U.S. Coast Guard as well as jurisdiction over regulation of the merchant marine (except as it relates to national security), ocean shipping, maritime transportation safety, marine environmental protections as related to vessel operations, and the Jones Act.
